Essex TOWC Open Competition 2021 Results

Week 2 of the revised tug of war season saw clubs travelling to Tiptree, Essex where, by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Embleton, Essex Tug of War Club played host to the visiting teams.

Covid protocols were still in force and the amended weight classes were men’s catchweight, 620kg and 660kg with ladies 540kg and 580kg. Teams in attendance were Oxney Vines Cross men and ladies, Lincoln, Bedfordshire, Bedford Ladies and hosts Essex TOWC.

The first weight of the day was the catchweight, Essex, Lincoln, Oxney Vines Cross and Bedfordshire all entered teams. This was run as a straight group with Lincoln coming out on top and Essex runners up.

Both ladies weights were run in between the rounds of the catchweight. As there were only two ladies teams present they agreed to go around twice getting some extra pulling. The result being that Bedford Ladies won both the 540kg and 580kg with Oxney Vines Cross coming runners up.

The 660kg was the next weight with 6 teams in the competition, Essex, Lincoln, Oxney Vines Cross A & B, Bedford Ladies and Bedfordshire. After the group stages the final was between Lincoln and Oxney Vines Cross A, which after some stubborn resistance Lincoln went on to win.

Seven teams took part in the 620kg weight class which was next. Essex TOWC was able to field a B team in this weight adding to the same teams that were in the 660kg. Again, this was run as a group finishing with the top two teams being Lincoln and Oxney Vines Cross A. This made for a tough final, Lincoln won the first end but Oxney managed to even things up by winning the second after Lincoln lost their shape and were eventually pushed out. Neither team wanted to lose the deciding end but eventually Oxney Vines Cross proved too strong for Lincoln and won.

The last weight of the day was the mixed 600kg. Four teams entered, Bedfordshire, Oxney Vines Cross A & B and Essex. This was run as a straight group with Oxney Vines Cross A winning and the B team runners up.

The officials on the day were Caroline Kenny (timekeeper/recorder), Mick Grimston, Vic Ludkin and Gavin Corden were the judges and Dave Kitchener was the chief judge.
