21st and 22nd May Weekend Tug of War Results

Saturday 21 May - Otley Show Results

Otley Show returned this year after a two year hiatus due to Covid and it was great to have tug of war back at another show, with a large crowd gathering throughout the afternoon to watch and support the teams taking part.

York, Ryedale, Penistone and Upper Wharfedale took part in this event across four mens weight classes and one mixed weight class.

York were the winners of all four of the mens weight classes on the day, despite being pushed very close by the other teams, especially Ryedale in the 640kg competition where they were a few inches from the line to defeating York.

The 600kg competition saw Penistone claim the winners medal after defeating Upper Wharfdale in the final with a 2 ends to 0 win.

Well done and thank you to the competition organisers - Dave Scruton has run this event for a number of years and it’s great to have this competition back on the fixture list. Thank you to Otley show for hosting the event and giving us the chance to put the sport in front of the public once again – hopefully we will see you again there next year.

In the mens weights, Lincoln continued their impressive form by winning all weight classes available on the day at 600, 640, 680 and catchweight. There were some good battles for the runners up spots behind them with Cupids Hill finishing as runners up in the catchweight and 640kg competitions, and Bosley finishing as runners up in the 600kg and 680kg competitions. In particular there was a lot of good pulling in the 640kg competition where there were quite a few 1-1 pulls between the teams, and with Cupids Hill dropping the fewest ends, they finished in the runners up spot.

In the ladies weight classes, 6 clubs took part across 3 ladies weight classes at 520kg, 540kg and 560kg. Bedford Ladies won all three weight classes without dropping any ends with the Army Ladies finishing as worthy runners up in all three weight classes. There was some competitive pulling among the other ladies teams throughout the day meaning that all of the teams got a good day of training for forthcoming championship competitions.

The day finished with the mixed competition pulled in a straight group of 8. There was some tough battles in the first round, two of which went 1 end each in the case of Bosley B vs Upper Eden, and Lincoln and Bedford. In particular, Lincoln’s pull with Bedford was a hard fought and exciting match, with the first end still going after the other three ropes had each finished both of their ends. The match between Lincoln and Bedford went 1-1, however neither side lost any further ends to take the top two places in the competition. After the TWIF criteria was applied, Bedford finished as the overall winners.

Well done to all of the teams who took part. It was good to see newer clubs attending this event, including the Harper Adams University team who were competing at a TOWA event for the first time and provide tug of war training opportunities for those studying at the University who wish to carry on with the sport whilst they are studying away from home.

The officials on the day were Roger Beardsmore, Gavin Corden, Dave Kitchener, Mick Scull, Pete Dyer, Ray Fray-Smith, Wendy Dyer, Caroline Abri, Heidi Maddison, Mark Williams.
