Lincoln TOWC Open Competition Results 2023
It was a busy day at this week’s competition hosted by Lincoln Tug of War Club with the following teams in attendance:
Men – Lincoln (A and B), Felton Eccles (A and B), Oxney Vines Cross, Netherseal, Sandhurst, Kilroe, Upton upon Severn, Holland, Bedfordshire (A and B), Bosley with Bedford Ladies and Melton Ladies also weighing team into the mens 600kg competition.
Ladies and Youth – Kilroe, Bedford Ladies, Bedfordshire, Melton Ladies, Bosley, Netherseal, Upton upon Severn, Army Ladies
The day started with the mens catchweight and ladies/youth 560 competitions, the catchweight being a group of 6 and the ladies and youth 560 being a group of 8. The catchweight competition was won by Lincoln with Felton Eccles finishing as the runners up. There was a lot of tug of war in the ladies and youth 560kg with Kilroe (juniors) finishing up as the eventual winners, with Bedford Ladies finishing just ahead of Melton Ladies to finish in the runners up spot.
The 600kg competition followed which was split into two groups. Oxney Vines Cross finished ahead of Sandhurst in Group 1 to progress to the final where they met with Lincoln who were the winners of group 2 ahead of Bosley. In the final Lincoln performed strongly to win their second weight of the day by 2 ends to 0.
The mens 680kg and Ladies / Junior 520kg competition followed, which were both again pulled as large groups. Lincoln continued by dominating the group stage of the 680kg competition to win the competition without dropping an end. There was some good pulling among the other teams in this competition with Felton collecting the most points to finish as strong runners up.
In the ladies and youth 520kg competition, it was Kilroe (juniors) who once again came out on top, only dropping one end in the competition. There were a lot of 1-1 pulls between the rest of the teams taking part with just a couple of points separating second and fourth place. Bosley finished as the eventual runners up by one point.
The mens 640kg and ladies/junior 540kg then followed with both again being pulled as large groups. There was again a lot of close pulling in the 640kg competition with a lot of keen competition with not much to choose between Lincoln A and B, Felton A and Sandhurst in the race for first place. Lincoln A finished as eventual winners without losing an end. Sandhurst and Lincoln B finished in joint second after finishing level on points and going 1-1 in the group rounds. When the criteria was applied, Lincoln B finished as the runners up.
The ladies and youth 540 concluded the ladies and youth programme for the day with Bedford Ladies performing strongly along with Bosley in this weight class with both teams meeting towards the end of the competition. This match was ultimately won by Bedford Ladies who won the pull by 2 ends to 0 which decided the winners and runners up spots for the competition.
The final weight of the day was the mixed 580kg competition which was split into two groups. Lincoln were the winners of group 1 ahead of Sandhurst, and Bedford were the winners of group 2 ahead of Bosley. It was a good close final this time which went to three ends, with Lincoln eventually winning by 2 ends to 1.
The officials on the day were Mick Grimston, Gavin Corden, Pete Dyer, Mike Callaghan, Dave Kitchener, Karl Bonahan, Wendy Dyer and Mark Williams.
