Bosley TOWC Open Competition Results  7/04/2024

Bosley Tug of War Club’s annual competition took place on Sunday 7 April, and given the recent and persistent rain, the venue was changed at the last minute and the competition was held at Cauldon Low Village Hall over the border in Staffordshire, who were very fortunately able to provide a venue at the last minute.

There was a lot of tug of war to get through on the day with so many entries, and despite the poor weather forecast, we only had a couple of rain showers, but otherwise it was a blustery day and the ground held up well despite all the recent wet weather.

In most of the competitions, the weights were split into two groups, with just the catchweight being run as a single group. There was a lot of competitive pulling which was great to see so early in the season and hopefully we will see more good competition in the coming weeks. Towards the end of the day, as time was getting on, some teams needed to withdraw, but those weights were still competitive nonetheless.

A couple of highlights were the mens 680kg final where Kilroe put up a well fought final against Lincoln, coming close to levelling the score on the second only to run out of steam and Lincoln come through to take the win. There was also a great final in the ladies/youth 520 kilos competition which went to 3 ends between Bosley and Kilroe, with Bosley taking the first end, Kilroe the second and Bosley the third end. There was also some good sporting behavior in the 600kg competition, with Lincoln entering the weight with two 7 man teams. After Lincoln A picked up an injury on route to the final, they had no spare substitutes available, so Upper Eden A dropped one puller from their 8 man team so we had a 6 vs 7 final, which Upper Eden won by 2 ends to 0.

Well done to all of the teams who took part, and a huge thanks to the small band of officials who were out on the field all day to keep things running – Gavin Corden, Karl Bonahan, Mick Scull, Ray Fray-Smith, Mark Williams, Caroline Kenny and newly qualified judge Tom.

Also huge thanks and well done to Bosley TOWC who managed to secure another venue at the very last minute (due to flooding issues at their original venue) to ensure that this event could go ahead. Given the number of teams that attended, it would have been a huge shame if this event had to be cancelled.
