FWA Training League 2024 Week 4 Results -  07/04/2024

Report by Nick Major

This weekend saw the final round of the Far Western Area Training League take place at Offwell and kindly hosted by Honiton.

Before I come to the results, I must thank all teams and officials for making this event once again a great success with special thanks to Sandhurst TOWC and Felton Eccles TOWC for making the effort to travel down from outside the area regularly. Also Judges Matt Cowlard and Tim Tatler for filling in the blanks when our FWA judges could not make a certain date. Thanks Guys.

This is really becoming a very nice friendly set of events with teams mixing in to help each other out with spare pullers to make the various weight categories. nothing seems too much trouble, but most of all, having fun whilst keeping a very competitive edge to the competition and blowing away the winter cobwebs in preparation for the more serious matter of the upcoming pulling season.

The weather gods were not so kind to us this week with overcast skies, high winds and the odd heavy shower but not to be put off like previous competitions, There was some very competitive pulling and with teams so close in the respective weight categories going into today’s event. In some cases any one of 4 teams were able to gain the winners spot or runner up spot in some weight categories. We also had 2 junior sides enter this weeks competition from Beaminster and Honiton so that was great to see.

We started as usual with the men’s 600kg run alongside the ladies 580kg. 8 teams entered the 600kg competition which was pulled in 2 groups of 4. Anstey won group A with Sandhurst B the runner up followed by St Enoder and then Haldon. In group B Felton were the winners followed by Honiton then Sandhurst A and then Yarcombe. In the semi finals, Anstey beat Honiton to set up the final Against Felton who overcame Sandhurst B. In the final Anstey overcame Felton 2-0 to claim the spoils.

In the ladies 580kg, 7 teams entered and the competition was pulled as a straight group. Sandhurst were the winners with Anstey finishing as runners up followed by St Enoder, Beaminster Youth, Honiton, Haldon and Yarcombe.

The men’s 680kg had 6 teams entered and was run as usual by itself with Anstey gaining top spot, Honiton the runner up then followed Felton, Yarcombe, Sandhurst A and finally Sandhurst B.

Next up was the men’s 640k with the ladies 600k. 6 teams entered the men’s 640kg competition with Anstey yet again the winners of the group with Felton and Honiton on equal points for the runner up spot, (the pull off was won by Honition 2-0) then Sandhurst A,Yarcombe and then Sandhurst B.

8 teams entered the ladies 600kg split into 2 groups of 4, with Anstey winning Group A with Honiton Youth the runner up followed by Yarcombe then Haldon. In group B Sandhurst were the winners with Honiton in the runner up spot, then St Enoder and then Beaminster Youth. In the semi final Anstey beat Honiton Ladies and Sandhurst beat Honiton Youth. The finals saw Sandhurst overcome Anstey 2-0.

The final weight of the day was the mixed competition where 8 teams entered. Split into 2 groups of 4. Group A was won by St Enoder with Honiton A runner up then Haldon and finally Sandhurst B. Group B was won by Anstey with Sandhurst A the runner up then Honiton B and finally Honiton C. The semi final saw St Enoder beat Sandhurst A and Anstey beat Honiton A. In the final Anstey beat St Enoder 2-0.

We then retired to the club house for refreshments and the presentation of the trophies. A big thank you to Honiton for hosting this weeks event, and we look forward to seeing you all once again in 2025 when we will hope to do this training league all over again.
