Junior and Under 23 Training Events 27/04/2024

On Saturday 27 April, some under 23 and junior tug of war training days took place, with a junior training day taking place in Devon, and an under 23 training day taking place in Cheshire. A summary of what these days entailed is set out below. We are looking to arrange more of these around the country in the coming weeks, so if your club or area would like to host an event, or if County Young Farmers federations would like us to come along to provide tug of war training for members, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with the TOWA and we can look to assist further.

Junior Training Day in Offwell, near Honiton, Devon

On Satuday 27 April, we held a Devon YFC Junior training fun day.

This was open to any junior from the South West who wished to sample tug of war.

It was a great turn out with 25 youngsters attending from Devon and adjoining counties and many for the first time on a rope!

We started the day with a quick briefing and practice weigh in to show them what to expect at a competition.

The attendees were split into 4 group, 3 of 6 team members and 1 of 7.

Then up to the gantry for some tuition from Tim, Mark and Stuart, and after a good hour’s training there we stopped for Lunch.

We then got down to the live pulling 4 teams in a round robin with the teams of 6 pullers borrowing a spare puller from a team that was not involved when matched with a team of 7 so everything was kept even.

In the group team 2 were the winners with team 4 the runner up, then team 1 followed by team 3.

The semi final saw team 1 beat team 3 and team 2 beat team 4.

The final saw team 2 overcome team 1.

We then had the girls versus the boys 8 boys vs 12 girls but the boys could make changes after each end and best of 5 ends.

This went to 2-2 with the boys taking the final end.

We had some great feedback from both those involved and the parents, so things are looking good and thanks to everyone for taking part and providing their feedback.
.
Thanks must go to Damian Richards and Offwell village hall for the use of the facilities, Robin Bennet and his team for the setting up and BBQ and then Tim Tatler, Mark Hutchins, Stuart Canning and Aiden Canning for the coaching and Jonny Neal for the judging.

We intend to follow this up with another session in the near future.

Under 23 Training Day, Cheshire

On Saturday 27 April, Bosley played host to an England U23’s training day. This time both U23 Men and U23 Women were in attendance. A thorough session was enjoyed by all as regimented block work was followed by competitive live double-pulley ends. Well done to everyone that attended, it was great to see a few new faces to add to the developing squads.

The teams will meet up again at Holland sports club’s International weekend where they will field teams in the respected classes.

If you wish to get involved with the England U23 tug of war set up don’t hesitate to contact U23 mens’ coach Dave Knott- 07779 852610 or U23 ladies’ coach David Kitchener- ‪07778 429533
