Meet the England Teams Representing England at the 2024 World Tug of War Championships
On 5-8 September, the TWIF World Outdoor Tug of War Championships will be taking place in Mannehim, Germany, and this will be the first time that a TWIF World Championships for tug of war will take place in Germany other than the World Games which were held there in 1989 and 2005. England will be represented in all 12 of the various junior, under 23 and senior weights which is fantastic to see! Meet all of the different teams who will be representing below - we wish them all the very best of luck, and no matter what the final results are, we hope that all of our competitors have a very positive experience. The England Junior Ladies 480kg team will be represented by Upper Eden who qualified for the event as national champions this year.
It was the first time for a number of years this year that we had a full programme of junior weights at the national championships which was great to see, and as such, the winning teams in each weight class were invited to represent England.
A number of pullers in this team were part of the junior ladies team that won the bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships and they will be hoping to be in the medals again this time.
The England Junior Men 560kg team will be represented by Upper Eden who qualified for the event as national champions this year.
It was the first time for a number of years this year that we had a full programme of junior weights at the national championships which was great to see, and as such, the winning teams in each weight class were invited to represent England.
A number of pullers in this team have been part of the junior squads that have been competing in the past 2 World Championships so will have built up some experience going into the competition. In addition, Upper Eden recently competed at GENSB achieving 5th place and will be hoping to take that good form into this years world championships.
The England Junior Mixed 520kg team will be represented by Upper Eden who qualified for the event as national champions this year.
It was the first time for a number of years this year that we had a full programme of junior weights at the national championships which was great to see, and as such, the winning teams in each weight class were invited to represent England.
A number of pullers in this team have been part of the junior squads that have been competing in the past 2 World Championships so will have built up some experience going into the competition. Last year, England finished 5th in this weight class and will be hoping to make the cross over this time and fight for the chance to win a medal.
The England womens under 23 500kg team will be a squad team of Under 23 pullers mainly made up of pullers from East Anglia, Bosley, Anstey, Kilroe and Holland.
The England under 23 ladies team will be going into the event off the back of winning silver at the World Championships in 2022 and bronze in 2023.
A number of pullers involved in the above teams have now moved out of this age category, so we will get to see a number of new members fighting hard in this weight class this year and we are looking forward to seeing what they are able to do!
The England under 23 mens 600kg team will be a squad team of Under 23 pullers made up of pullers from Anstey, East Anglia, Felton Eccles, Lincoln, Kilroe and Bosley.
Some of the pullers involved in the team are competing in their first full outdoor season on the TOWA circuit and notwithstanding this the team has already put in some great performances this year, progressing to the top four of the senior mens 600kg competition at the British and Irish Championships as England C which was a fantastic achievement.
The squad will be hoping to improve on the 6th place achieved at the world championships in 2023.
The England under 23 mixed 560kg team will be another squad team of Under 23 pullers.
The England mixed team in 2023 achieved great things, winning bronze at the British and Irish Championships in the senior mixed 580kg competition, and then followed this up with bronze in the under 23 competition at the 2023 World Championships in addition to silver in the open competition.
So far this year, the team pulled together in the senior mixed competition at the 2024 British and Irish Championships as England C and again won the bronze medal. They will be very much hoping to be in the medals again at the World Championships this year.
The England Womens 500kg team will this year be represented by Melton Mowbray Ladies who won this weight class at the national championships defeating Bedford Ladies at this weight for the first time with Bedford having never lost this weight since its introduction.
Melton Ladies represented England in the 560kg weight class at the British and Irish Championships recently and won the gold medal.
This is Melton Ladies fourth full season on the ladies circuit and they have made great progress in a short space of time and managed to get a bronze medal in the open competition at the 2022 World Championships. They will be hoping to pick up a medal again this time.
The ladies 500kg at the World Championships this year is a World Games qualifying weight with the top 6 countries qualifying for the 2025 World Games which will be taking place in Chengdu, China. Great Britain finished fourth in the ladies competition at the 2022 World Games, which take place every 4 years (delayed by 1 year due to the pandemic) and Melton Mowbray Ladies will hoping to qualify Great Britain to compete again to go for a medal.
The England Womens 540kg team will this year be represented by Bedford Ladies who qualified for the event as national champions.
Bedford represented England at the 2024 World Championships in the 500kg competition and finished in an agonising 4th place.
Always a very competitive team at international level, they will go into the competition having recently won gold in the 520kg competition at the British and Irish Championships and will very much have their sights on a medal at this years world championships.
Bedford have so far had a very successful domestic season winning gold in three of the four of the ladies weight classes at the national championships, as well as the ladies AAA, Inter County and national league titles.
The England 560kg team will be represented by Upper Eden from Cumbria who qualified to represent England after winning silver in this weight class at the 2024 National Championships. Upper Eden also took bronze in the 600kg and silver in the catchweight in the mens national championships this year.
Upper Eden last represented England at the World Championships at 560kg at the 2022 World Championships held in Holten, Netherlands where they finished in 6th place overall.
Upper Eden recently represented England B in the 600kg competition and will be hoping to improve on that competition at the World Championships.
The England 640kg team will this year be represented by Lincoln who qualified for this competition as national champions and won gold in the mens 560, 600, 640, 680, catchweight and mixed 580kg at the national championships. Lincoln, as England representatives, will be representing England in this weight class for the fourth year running,
The 640kg at the World Championships this year is a World Games qualifying weight with the top 6 countries qualifying for the 2025 World Games which will be taking place in Chengdu, China.
Lincoln represented Great Britain at the 2022 World Games, which take place every 4 years (delayed by 1 year due to the pandemic) in the 640kg where they won silver and they will hoping to qualify again and go one better.
At the 2023 World Championships, Lincoln won bronze in both the open and closed competition and will be hoping to be in the medals again this time.
The England 680kg team will this year be represented by Felton Eccles TOWC who are based in Somerset. Felton Eccles qualified as England representatives for the mens 680kg competition as silver medallists in this weight class at the 2024 English National Championships.
Felton also won gold in the 720kg at the national championships and have had a good season so far.
Felton of course are no strangers to international tug of war having represented England on numerous occasions winning several international titles and other medals of various colours over the years, and recently picked up bronze as England B at the British and Irish Championships held in Melton Mowbray.
Felton last represented England in this weight class at the 2022 World Championships where they won the bronze medal and will be hoping to be in contention for medals again this time.
The England Mixed 580kg team will be represented by a combined team of Lincoln and Bedford Ladies.
These two clubs have represented together in the mixed competition on several occasions, winning a number of gold medals at the British and Irish Championships and were world championships bronze medalists in 2021.
They then went on to represent Great Britain at the 2022 World Games where they won the gold medal.
At the 2023 World Championships they achieved 4th place after a very tough competition.
The mixed 580kg is again a World Games weight and they will be hoping to qualify to represent Great Britain next year in order to have a chance of defending the World Games title won in 2022!
In addition to the above, a number of our representative teams will be competing in the open club competition on Thursday and Friday, and they will also be joined in the open competition by East Anglia and Bosley and we wish everyone the best of luck in the club competition too!
