Bosley TOWC Open Competition 2019 Results

Teams competing - Men / 4+4 - Bosley (A and B), Norton (A and B), Upper Eden (A and B), Lincoln, Diesel Power, Ashbourne YFC, Sandbach YFC, Felton Eccles, Holland, York - Ladies/Junior - York, Cheadle, Kilroe Ladies, Bedford Ladies, Army Ladies, Upper Eden Ladies, Holland Ladies

This weekend, Bosley TOWC held their annual open competition in Astbury near Congleton, Cheshire. There was another good turn out of teams taking part this weekend, with teams taking part in mens, ladies/youth and mixed competitions. Photo: Lincoln

The event started with the mens catchweight  and ladies/junior 560kg competition. The catchweight was pulled as a straight group of 7 teams with the top two teams progressing to compete in a final. Norton and Lincoln emerged as the top two teams in the competition just ahead of Felton Eccles who finished in third place. Norton and Lincoln both went 1-1 in the group stage to make for an interesting final. Both teams lined up again in the final, and with a very close pull, Lincoln took first place by 2 ends to 0. In the ladies/junior 560kg competition, this was pulled as a straight group. There was some more close competition in this weight, and it was good to see a number of new ladies/juniors taking part. Cheadle as a new team to TOWA events competed well taking some ends and it was good to see them enjoying the day. The top two teams that emerged was Bedford and York, with Bedford eventually finishing in first place with York as the runners up. Photo: Cheadle YFC

The 600kg competition was run as two groups of 6 teams, with some teams opting to weigh in with 7 pullers to get additional training, as allowed in open competitions as per TOWA rules. Again, there was some close pulling in both groups with only the top team in each group progressing to the final. Some notable performances in this weight class included those from Sandbach and Ashbourne, again two new teams to TOWA events and despite not getting into a medal position, took some good ends off some of the established clubs and gave everyone a good run for their money. The final was contested between Upper Eden and Norton A, with Upper Eden putting in a strong and convincing performance to win the final by 2 ends to 0. The 4+4 competition then followed which was pulled as a straight group. Upper Eden had two teams in this weight class, with their A team finishing top of the group. York performed well to finish as the second place team with the top two teams competing again in the final. Upper Eden A put in another good performance to get their second first place finish of the day to mark a strong start to the season for the team from Cumbria who are assisting in hosting this year’s national championships at Cumberland Show on 15 June. The mens 680kg competition then followed, along with the ladies/junior 520kg competition. The ladies/junior competition was pulled as a straight group and the mens 680kg competition was split into two groups. Photo: Ashbourne YFC

The ladies/junior 520kg competition saw some close matches taking place, with a number of pulls going 1-1. Bedford emerged as the top team in this weight class, this time ahead of Upper Eden Ladies who put in a good solid performance and have improved vastly over the past 12 months. Well done to all who took part in the ladies/junior competition. Photo: Holland TOWC Ladies

The mens 680kg competition was split into two groups with the top team in each group progressing to the final. Lincoln progressed to the final as winners of group 1, and Norton progressed to the final as winners of group 2. The final saw Norton put in a convincing performance to win by 2 ends to 0 to win their first final of the day. Photo: Norton

The final weight of the day was the 640kg competition, which was again split into two groups. Felton Eccles won their group, with Norton winning the second group. In the final, Felton gave a good account of themselves, but it was Norton who won the group by 2 ends to 0 to win their second final of the day. Photo: Sandbach YFC

The event was officiated by Tony Henshaw, Mick Grimston, Dave Kitchener, Gavin Corden, Tony Gray and Caroline Abri who all did a great job getting through the competition given the number of teams taking part and the limited number of officials in attendance on the day. Photo: Felton Eccles
